Campaign for Learning

The Campaign for Learning is working for an
inclusive society in which:

everyone has the right to learn

everyone understands and values learning

everyone has the chance to learn throughout their lives.

The Campaign has been going for 10 years, helping to stimulate learning that excites, supports, develops and involves people throughout their lives. We work for social inclusion through learning in families, schools and workplaces, running promotional campaigns, supporting practitioner networks, running national and local projects and events and lobbying to influence policy.

The Learning Partnership team at the college has developed a distance learning programme which is made up of parents of children starting school in Warwick district.

Family Learning Works offers practitioners in the fields of family literacy, language and numeracy a stimulating programme of activities and resources which have been extremely well received by employers and employees alike.

The programme is based on a blended modular approach to learning using a mixture of fun, well designed paper-based materials and interactive CD-ROMs.

Feedback demonstrates that working parents feel more positive about their roles as valued parents and about themselves as learners as a result of their involvement in the programme.

The London Borough of Tower Hamlets

Skills for Families

Skills for Families are located with the Lifelong Learning Service area of the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. The borough faces particular challenges as a local authority. According to government’s index of multiple deprivations, it ranks as one of the most deprived local authority areas in the country. Almost 100 languages are spoken locally, and 48 per cent of residents come from black and minority ethnic communities, rising to 75 percent in the case of school-age children. Tower Hamlets also has one of the youngest populations in the country, with just over half of all residents under the age of 30.

The Skills for Families offer a broad range of opportunities for families with children in primary and secondary schools, children centres and community centres across the borough. Learning is offered through workshops 2–4 hours, introductory courses (9–13) hours and short courses (30 hours). Sessions are delivered by qualified Skills for Life tutors and on most courses in partnership with pre-16 teachers or early years (0–5) practitioners. Currently courses are not linked to qualifications but are subject to RARPA (a tool for recognising and recording progress and achievement in learning).
